What a Rose Taught Me About Research, Mentoring, and the Art of Waiting
"Mignonne, allons voir si la rose..." So begins one of the most famous poems by the sixteenth-century French poet Pierre de Ronsard, whose verses helped immortalize the rose as a symbol of beauty, time, and human aspiration. More than four centuries later, a rose bearing his name sits in my garden. For over a year, I watched it grow. It established roots. It produced leaves and stems. Then, at last, it bloomed. Two flowers. Just two. And they were worth every day of waiting.

Poetry in Scientific Texts: Balancing Clarity and Creativity
This morning, while performing a search for safety data on a drug on internet, among all hits, one in particular caught my eye. It contained a quote from Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince: "It is the time you have spent for your rose that makes your rose so important." Reading it moved something in me that made me check that hit over the other ones. The reference was not relevant for my purpose. But still, I will remember it longer than all the other ones. Introduction We kno

What Do Waterproof Umbrellas Have to Do with Generative AI?
My son craved for a football outfit for his last birthday. My husband ordered one and we waited for it to be delivered. And waited, and waited. And the outfit still wasn't in our mailbox a month after the order date. When I politely enquired what happened, I was informed that we had cancelled the order, and that the amount was refunded to us. Which wasn't true. So I politely wrote back to ask for either a proof of refund, or the outfit be sent. And we waited again. Two months

When the Reptililian Brain Takes Over
Years ago, late one evening, my drunk boyfriend passed out in the bathroom and hit his head on the solid white tiles of the floor. Blood smeared from under his head, at the level of his ear. He wasn't moving. I got really scared, imagining the worst, and quickly got my phone with the intention of calling emergency. BUT, in panic, I was unable to unlock my phone and dial the so simple 3-digit number. BEFORE this event, I was confident that I could dial that number in any circu

Why Your CV Deserves a Makeover: Structure, Style, and Vitamin B
In today’s job market, your CV isn’t just a document—it’s your personal satellite signal, broadcasting who you are, what you can do, and why you’re worth noticing. And just like any scientific instrument, the quality of that signal depends on three things: clarity, precision, and design. But there’s more. Behind every successful job application lies a combination of strategy, self-awareness, and - let’s be honest - relationships. Or as we call it in Germany, Vitamin B (Bezieh

What if you died in three days?
We're all going to die. The later the better, right? Knowing that it will eventually happen, or knowing that you only have three days left to live, are complete different things. For the vast majority of us, the former applies; which allows us to stay somewhat in denial, leading our everyday life as if we're immortal. Imagine for a second that you know for sure that in three days, you will die? How would you feel, and what would you do? Introduction Luckily, I still belong to

The Beauty of the In-Between: Finding Meaning After Endings
There’s a hush that lingers right after something ends. The laughter fades when the last beach day of summer is over. The final page of a novel leaves us both satisfied and a little hollow. A relationship concludes, and suddenly there’s a silence where conversation once lived. These are not beginnings yet, nor are they fully endings. They are the in-between spaces—often overlooked, often uncomfortable, yet deeply alive with meaning.
